An antique cast iron fire starter pot, often referred to as a "smudge pot" or "Cape Cod fire starter". These pots were commonly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to easily and quickly start fires in fireplaces and stoves. It consists of a 3 legged cast iron pot, a brass lid, and a long-handled dipper with a pumice stone tip.
The pot would be filled with kerosene, allowing the pumice-tipped dipper to soak up the fuel. The soaked pumice would then be used to ignite kindling or logs.
Pot, lid, and wand, are all in good solid condition, with age appropriate cosmetic wear. There are no cracks, breaks, or other structural damage.
Rescued from an old barn in Southeastern Pennsylvania, this kettle was definitely used over the years and has lots of character! It would be perfect for the blacksmith enthusiast, or it would complement your fireplace hearth, deck, or patio very nicely.
