This is a rare, Karl Baisch Autokofferfabrik, Mercedes Benz, Luggage / Hat Box from the 1950's.
Karl Baisch partnered with Mercedes Benz and made luggage designed to fit perfectly in the trunk space of specific, vintage models. Made with high quality materials and extraordinary craftsmanship, each bag could be ordered separately. Sets included different sized rectangular cases, a shoe box and a hat box.
Mercedes had luggage designed for their cars from 1930-1970 Several models of Mercedes had luggage designed specifically to fit their unusual trunk shapes, including the 300SL Gullwing and Roadster as well as the 190SL. Karl Baisch manufactured luggage for Mercedes-Benz until 1958, then in 1959 Mercedes switched to Hepco.
Hat Box measures approximately 17" x 15" x 7", and is lined with tartan fabric with gold ribbons on both the bottom and lid. Leather handle and lock flap have silver metal hardware. Lock clasp is marked with a horseshoe with an "S" over a star. There is no key for the lock. The bag is in excellent condition overall, the interior looks like it was barely used. There is some loss of elasticity to the gathered pocket, consistent with age but no rips, tears or stains. No damage to the leather edges or the body of the case.
Perfect gift for a vintage Mercedes-Benz owner or enthusiast.
