This is a wonderful, original signed ceramic Asian sculpture. I believe this is a statue of Dhritarashtra (Sanskrit name) or Jikokuten (Japanese name) one of the Four Heavenly Kings, a directional guardian of the East. He holds a Pipa which is a type of Lute. It is believed that he protects all beings and uses music to convert people to Buddhism.
It is a very solid, clay statue that is hand painted and finished with a crackle type glaze creating a great, aged patina.
Measured 13” wide at the tip of the elbows x 7-1/2” deep. Bottom measures 9-1/2” wide from tips of feet x 7-1/2” deep. Stands 19” tall.
Weight is just under 14 lbs.
This piece is in very good condition, free of breaks, and other structural damage. Flaws and imperfections as expected with vintage, handmade items.
Very unique and sturdy sculpture would look great in your home or garden.
